Here at Hampton Court House we have chess sets in the Main Hall. Sometimes I come across parents using the sets to play against their (usually very young) children. It only takes a few moves to realise that many of the parents have no idea at all how to play real chess. They’re doing little [...]

The margin of victory should have been bigger, but even one point is enough. That makes 12-0 and keeps Notre Dame #1; on now to the national championship January 7 in Miami, where the Irish's next victim will almost surely be the winner of next week's Alabama-Georgia game. Twelve down, one to go!
Time for some great music:

As Magnus Carlsen did yesterday in his match, Judit Polgar did today in hers: she started with a win in the rapid game against Manuel Leon Hoyos and then drew in blindfold to secure her place in Sunday's final of the 2nd UNAM Chess Festival.

I'll just mention here some recent works I've used and enjoyed. Some I've purchased and a few were sent, but in the latter instances none were given with "conditions" - if I thought the products in question were poor I wouldn't have mentioned then. Let's begin.
1. First up is Walter Browne's The Stress of Chess (And Its Infinite Finesse). This autobiographical work by the American GM (originally...

The 11-0, #1-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish finish the regular season tonight with a decisive victory over the aptly-named USC Trojans, starting at 8 p.m. ET; the demolition can be viewed, with pleasure, on ABC. Pregame materials are here, and a reply to a recent hit-piece in a popular sports magazine can be found here.
Go Irish!

There were two winners today in the FIDE Grand Prix in Tashkent: Fabiano Caruana, who defeated Gata Kamsky in the battle of the Americans*; and Shakhriyar Mamedyarov, who won against Peter Svidler. Caruana won a long, tough game in a slow Chebanenko Slav (but I repeat myself), gradually building on the kingside and breaking through with a mating attack shortly after the time control. As for...

Antoaneta Stefanova has been very successful in the 2012 Women's World Championship, going 8/10 in the classical games (and 2-0 in the tiebreaks), and with two days off before the final looks to be in great shape to regain the crown she won back in 2004. She beat Harika Dronavalli in their first game, yesterday, and played an excellent counter-attacking game today to draw from a position of...

The chess festival in Mexico City is a full show - not only is there the four player knockout event with Magnus Carlsen, Lazaro Bruzon, Judit Polgar and Manuel Leon Hoyos; there is also a Carlsen vs. the Rest of the World game (maybe there will be a pair of games?) underway right now. You can join in the fun through the website.
As for the knockout event, Carlsen won his sem-final against Bruzon...

Harika Dronavalli (India) needed to win as White to tie the match score against Antoaneta Stefanova (Bulgaria) in the semifinal of the Women’s World Chess Championship. In a slow maneuvering game the Indian advanced her pawns on the queenside, and Stefanova pushed on the kingside. As the game got more open, Black sacrificed a piece [...]
