Former World Chess Champion Anatoly Karpov makes his first trip to Saint Louis, the home of the US Chess Championship, to play an exhibition match against Yasser Seirawan. 2 classical time control games on Sunday and Monday (game 1 drawn), 2 rapid games on Tuesday and 10 blitz games on Wednesday. As usual Ben Finegold and Jennifer Shahade provide live commentary which is usually very enjoyable.

The King’s Indian Defence is rather a rare bird in top class tournaments these days. Yet from the 1950s to 1990s it was high fashion, largely thanks to the efforts of Bobby Fischer and Garry Kasparov. What happened? First of all it seems that modern players generally prefer classical openings such as the Slav Defence [...]

The 25th Leon Masters went ahead in spite of the financial crisis engulfing Spain. The organisers did a truly great job keeping going for so long and didn't deserve to have their thunder stolen by the Tal Memorial. Veselin Topalov and one of his former seconds Francisco Vallejo Pons played a 6 game rapid match Friday 8th - Sunday 10th June 2012. 2 games at 45m+15spm per day.

Paco Vallejo finally lifted the trophy in Leon, after defeating one of the greatest chess players of the world, the former champion Veselin Topalov, in the 6-games rapid match. Vallejo secured the overall victory by scoring a full point in the 5th game of the match. Topalov won the last game for the final score [...]

The 6-game rapid match between Francisco Vallejo Pons and former FIDE world champion Veselin Topalov finished today in a 3.5-2.5 victory for the Spaniard. Vallejo won game 5 with the white pieces to clinch overall victory. Topalov won the last game after Vallejo blundered at the end of a long defense, but it wasn't enough to save the match. Vallejo certainly isn't a bad player, but whatever...

Round 3 of the 2012 Tal Memorial wasn't as exciting as its predecessors, but it wasn't bad, either. Three games ended in fairly quick draws, though two of the three had their moments.
The least interesting game saw Magnus Carlsen play a sideline against Fabiano Caruana's Gruenfeld, get nothing at all, and in an equal and flat position the players cooperated to reach a hopelessly drawn pure...

The 7th Tal Memorial Round 3 took place on 10th June 2012. Alexander Morozevich joined Teimour Rajdabov in the lead. Luke McShane shocked Levon Aronian by winning with black after sacrificing the exchange..

Alexander Morozevich defeated his compatriot Alexander Grischuk in the third round of the 2012 Tal Memorial to catch Teimour Radjabov on the shared first place. Despite the slightly eccentric play in the opening, Grischuk actually picked up the initiative some time in the late middlegame. But then he underestimated the counter-sacrifice which gave Morozevich excellent [...]
