In these days of computer based preparation and constant yearning after so-called ‘edges’ or ‘equality’ it’s easy to forget these wise words of Savielly Tartakover. Given that there are only three outcomes to a chess game (win for White, draw or win for Black) does an edge for one side mean a win or a [...]

  • Women's World Championship, Game 1: Humpy Koneru Presses But Doesn't Win

World champion Hou Yifan had a very difficult time today against Humpy Koneru. With White, the challenger enjoyed a serious initiative for a long time in an Open Catalan, but couldn't quite push the champ over the edge. Only a draw, but it was still a psychologically promising start for the Indian grandmaster. Official site here, game (with my light notes) here.

  • Koneru presses for a while against Hou but Women's World Championship starts with a draw - 1

The first game of the Women's World Chess Championship in Tirana, Albania ended in a draw. It looked like Hou Yifan would completely equalise early at one stage but in the end she had to exercise some care and take a rook and pawn ending where Koneru had an extra pawn on the kingside but where the draw was pure technique.

Eric van Reem sends a press release for Round 1 of the Euwe Memorial where there were three draws. Stuart Conquest didn't manage to make it due to trying to travel from England on the day of the event (if I'd been invited to an event I think I would have rather forgone playing the 4NCL on Sunday rather than try to do this) and running into fog. Although his opponent KetevanArakhamia-Grant also...
