  • Magistral Casino Barcelona 2011 - Games and Results

    www.chess.co.uk | 13/10/2011 15:48:00 | Reads: 80
The Magistral Casino Barcelona tournament takes place 12th-20th October 2011. The continued return of Yasser Seirawan is probably the biggest interest. Sadly GM Eduardo Iturrizaga had a nasty car accident on the way to the airport (he's more or less fine but the car is a write-off) and had to withdraw. So the event goes ahead with just 9 players. Yasser didn't get to play until round 2.

  • Short – Kasparov, Bishop’s Gambit

    chessimprover.com | 13/10/2011 01:00:13 | Reads: 99
The blitz match between Gary Kasparov and Nigel Short produced some entertaining chess. Kasparov probably chose the Black openings he did (1.e4 e5 plus the Modern Defence) because he hasn’t been playing much lately and no doubt wanted to avoid things that are too topical. Nigel Short’s response was to play some old fashioned lines [...]

I've reviewed quite a few issues of the Informant for this site, so many of you will know the general story already, even if you've never seen a copy before. The Informant is published three times a year, and the meat of each issue comprises several hundred games and game fragments played during the relevant four month period. (There are 301 such games and fragments in issue 111, which covers...

We arrived back in England earlier today and, after a slight delay at the airport picking up an errant scarf, I travelled home and Sue off to work. We were both rather exhausted as we managed less than five hours sleep last night (in search of the errant Northern Lights but Sue will expand on [...]

  • Catching Up on Poikovsky and Saratov

    www.thechessmind.net | 12/10/2011 12:02:28 | Reads: 93
Aside from the Sao Paulo/Bilbao super-tournament that just finished, two other high caliber events are well underway. One is the Karpov Tournament in Poikovsky, Russia, and the other is the Governor's Cup in Saratov - also in Russia. Both events have had a disappointingly high percentage of draws, and in the case of the Poikovsky tournament, short draws. In eight rounds (forty games) in Poikovsky...
