Alexander Morozevich and Gata Kamsky went through in the rapid phase of the play-offs. Ruben Felgaer eliminated Vladimir Malakhov in one of the surprises of the round, although it has long been known that at his best he is very good, he also has his weak moments, both qualities were seen in the match. Alexander Motylev played so slowly in the Armaggedon game against Drozdovskij it was physically...

I take a look at Alexander Motylev's elimination by Yuri Drozdovskij in a final Armaggedon game. He just couldn't get his tempo right. Needing only a draw he was slow at the start he didn't speed up until it was physically impossible to make the time control at move 60 (where he would have got all of 3 seconds per move). Watching it live was painful, "For god sake speed up!"
By playing so slowly...

Most of the favorites continued smoothly along, qualifying for round 2 on Wednesday. Most, but not all! The two big upset victims from day 1, Peter Leko and Wang Yue, were unable to take revenge today against Sam Shankland and Alexandr Fier, respectively. Wang Yue did have his chances, but Fier escaped with a draw to advance. As for Leko, he tried to mix things up with the Modern Benoni, but was...

Sam Shankland accepted a draw in an overwhelmingly winning position against Peter Leko to eliminate
the Hungarian in the surprise of the round. Wang Yue was also eliminated, by Alexandr Fier after
blowing a winning advantage that would have seen him level the match. Kamsky and Morozevich
go to playoffs but most of the favourites went through without the need for them.
