Vassily Ivanchuk won the Tradewise Gibraltar Masters with an outstanding 9/10. He conceded just two draws. He was half a point clear of Nigel Short who lost to Ivanchuk and drew just one further game for a performance that would normally have given him first place, Short was a point clear of the rest of the field. There is often an end-of-term feel at the conclusion of chess tournaments. Players have made friends and agree quick draws. There was no air of this here. Perhaps that is because of the size and depth of the prize list, or perhaps because the organisers work so hard to encourage attractive players to attend the tournament.

As documented at TWIC here, the London bid for the 2010 World Championship match has been withdrawn after FIDE exceeded the negotiating deadline. This is a shame, if not a huge surprise. London seemed ideal to become part of the run-up to the 2012 Olympic Games that begin in May. But generally speaking, the more open and professional the organizer, the less Kirsan Ilyumzhinov and his cronies...
