Hikaru Nakamura entered the penultimate round of the 2011 Wijk aan Zee tournament with a half-point lead over Viswanathan Anand, paired with Vladimir Kramnik with his final White of the tournament. How did he use it? A little suprisingly, he decided to "smeet" ("smeetsify"?) Kramnik. This neologistic crime indicated that he, like Jan Smeets some rounds back, decided to play 5.Re1 against...

Hikaru Nakamura took the very professional decision of steering straight towards a draw against Vladimir Kramnik in the first game of round 12 (the penultimate one) to finish. This nearly became a tournament winning decision as Viswanathan Anand got into terrible trouble against Anish Giri. However Anand really started to play in a lost position putting up the toughest possible resistance and in...

In the 12th round the American grandmaster drew quickly with Vladimir Kramnik, and saw Vishy Anand escaping with a draw against Anish Giri many hours later. In the B group McShane and Navara share the lead, and meet [...]

Nigel Short beat Deep Sengupta with the black pieces to 4/4 alongside Nadezhda Kosintseva. Vassily Ivanchuk made a nice rook sacrifice to win a game that otherwise would have been drawn. 79 year old Viktor Korchnoi remains undefeated.

The round 4 report isn't up yet on their site, but you can find the games of that round here. It's still pretty early in the event, but there have already been plenty of GM-GM battles. Short and Nadezhda Kosintseva lead so far with perfect 4-0 scores, Ivanchuk is half a point behind, and the indefatigable Viktor Korchnoi has three points and is continuing to play very well. In round 3 he drew...

Round 11 at Wijk aan Zee, the antepenultimate round, saw two major results transpire. The first was Nakamura's win over Nepomniachtchi in a crazy Caro-Kann. Perhaps Nakamura wanted to play something solid, but his opponent played with an almost rabid aggression. It backfired, and the young American picked up the full point. That gave him clear first, because the other leader entering...

There are only two rounds left to play in Wijk aan Zee and for the second time, Hikaru Nakamura is the sole leader of the illustrious A Group. He has bounced back from a crushing loss to Carlsen in round 8 to win his second in a row today, outplaying Nepomniachtchi on the black side of a Caro-Kann. That separated Nakamura from Anand, who drew against Vachier-Lagrave. The win also propelled...
