What a last round! More than half the field was in the running for first place, and there were all kinds of surprises.
Mamedyarov started the round in clear first, half a point ahead of Aronian and Karjakin, with Wang Yue, Grischuk and Nakamura another half point behind.

Prior to last week this looked like an obvious rout, with Utah rated #5 in the nation and the self-destructive Notre Dame team nursing lots of injuries. But then Utah lost by 40 points to TCU, so who knows? Maybe they're not really that good. So let's be optimistic and suppose that ND has a genuine shot this week, especially playing at home after a bye week to rest up and get a bit healthier.

According to the official site, Gelfand resigned. ICC, where I was watching, dutifully repeated the information, and while I wasn't listening, apparently the GM commentary agreed. That's all nice, except that the final position is drawn, not lost.
