In a match that set chess, or at least opening theory, back 150 years, Ivanchuk and Nakamura played a couple of King's Gambits in their final match at Cap D'Agde. Nakamura forgot the rule that says the older player is always the favorite in a King's Gambit, and that's how it turned out today.
In game 1, with Ivanchuk White, the game went 1.e4 e5 2.f4 Nc6 3.Nf3 f5, but rather than go for the main...

We couldn't have done it any better if our players were getting paid to throw the game. And seriously, did Brian Kelly call for his freshman, second-string quarterback to throw in the end zone, into double coverage, in a situation where the standard operating even at the pro level is to run safe plays and kick a field goal as time runs out? Let's see...risky play with a talented but very...

1. It wasn't quite as uninspiring as the first round, but the last round of the Unive Crown Group saw a couple of relatively quick, low-energy draws. Rounds 2-5 were all spectacular though, so I'm not inclined to complain. The final standings:
1. Vachier-Lagrave 4.5
2. Shirov 3.5
3. Giri 3
4. Tiviakov 1
2. In Cap D'Agde, Nakamura defeated Le Quang Liem 3-1 while Ivanchuk beat Bu Xiangzhi...

The carnage begins at 2:30 p.m. ET, and will be televised - despite the possible trauma to young viewers' minds - on NBC. More info here.

Moving onto the chess, I think that if you had told me beforehand that I would beat Magnus Carlsen and we would place ahead of two Russian teams I would have thought the event had gone fairly well! However, it didn’t really work out like that; I got the team off to a bad start [...]

Despite the early round time, all three games were very interesting and played with a lot of energy.
The first to finish was the most important one, the Anand-Bacrot battle for second place. Bacrot beat Anand in the first cycle, but this time Anand got his revenge, outplaying the Frenchman in an old-fashioned main line Nimzo-Indian with 4.e3. Anand played very well, breaking through on the...

Good news for viewers in the Western hemisphere. The previous Nanjing rounds started at 2:30 a.m. ET (8:30 a.m. CET), but it seems that the last round starts tonight (ET) at 10 p.m. (30 minutes from now, as of this writing.) Such a big change is probably unpleasant for the players, but at least it means lots of us in the Americas can watch the games without doing insane things with our sleeping...

The Crown Group of Unive is more of the same, and that's a good thing - except for Tiviakov. He lost once again, this time to tournament leader Vachier-Lagrave, while Shirov won spectacularly against Giri to jump back into second. After five (of six) rounds, the standings are: Vachier-Lagrave 4, Shirov 3, Giri 2.5, Tiviakov .5.
At Cap D'Agde the semi-finals are set. Le Quang Liem won a nutty...

It's a funny name invented by Hans Kmoch, but when you watch the show you'll understand what the term means. More importantly, you'll know the concept and have some idea of how it works and how to use it! Have a look here: the show is free (free registration required) and will be available for a month or so.

Magnus Carlsen is once again the winner of the Pearl Spring tournament in Nanjing, China, and once again he's doing it with a big score (though it won't be as big as last year's win, no matter what happens in the last round). Still, his wins this year all remind me of really bad sports movies, where the action is choreographed to let the hero succeed against embarrassingly poor resistance. Today...
