Recently a video went viral online of Bill Gates losing a blitz chess game in nine moves to the new World Chess Champion Magnus Carlsen, getting checkmated quickly: The truth is deeper than it seems Non-chess-playing friends of mine enjoyed forwarding me links to this. Their general impression was, ha, of course the nine-move checkmate […]

Hungarian grandmaster Gyula Sax passed away this past Saturday at the age of 62, reportedly of a heart attack. Sax didn't stay near the top long enough to be well-known to those who weren't around during his peak years, but he was a very strong player who qualified for the Candidates in 1987 - never an easy feat.
Rest in peace.

What a strange and interesting blitz tournament, especially when viewed through Magnus Carlsen's performance! In round one, he had White against Fabiano Caruana, and he was beaten like a child. Carlsen did manage to fight back and save...

The strongest ever round-robin by rating gets underway today in Zurich (average rating: 2801!), and in the meantime what is possibly the strongest open tournament of the year is also underway, in Gibraltar. It started yesterday, and among the players there are more than 60 GMs, nine of whom are rated over 2700. The website coverage of the event is generally excellent, so if you're looking for a...

The festivities at this super-tournament in Zurich start in about two and a half hours or so. They will be following the recent tradition of starting the event with a blitz tournament to determine pairing numbers; that's what will take place today. The practice is dubious in terms of fairness, I think, as players picking later can choose based on the colors they'll get against the stronger...
