Some traveling and busyness made it hard to keep up this weekend, and this won't be much of a report either - at least not yet. I'll take a page out of other sites' practices and say "more later". What can and should be said now is that despite spoiling the tournament a bit by blundering and losing what had been a better position against the bottom seed Levon Aronian still won this year's main...

Well, the endgame in correspondence chess on a well known server is anyway! As from 2014 all new tournaments have a rule that you can claim a win or draw if the board position contains six men or less which is confirmed by a tablebase for 6-pieces. I can see why the server have done […]

Goran Urosevic: Hello Morten Sand, I wanted to ask several questions about the contract between Kasparov and Leong. Who asked you in first place to draft this contract? Morten Sand: I was contacted quite early by Garry Kasparov, who wanted me to help with legal matters and other matters. And I agreed to this. We [...]

The line-up in the 2014 Tradewise Gibraltar Chess Festival, starting on January 27 is truly fabulous with over 60 GM’s, nine of which are 2700+ and a further sixteen are rated over 2600. It will be the strongest festival of the year so far, with massive participation in the Masters, Amateurs, and Challengers groups. A [...]

The London Classic began with some exhibition games: the Pro Am event in the morning was won by Matthew Sadler and Daniel Lindner from Barclays. As it coincided with the very welcome BarcIaycard sponsorship deal with Chess in Schools and Communities this seemed appropriate. This tremendous achievement was a fitting reward for the work Malcolm [...]

My daily classes are divided into two parts. During the first part of the class, I deliver a lecture based on a historical game. The game shown will highlight key concepts such as opening principles, tactics and endgame play. I also like to talk about chess’s fascinating history since so many younger students sadly have […]

I hadn’t explained before but our trip was divided up into 3: time with family, then with friends and a mini moon! After spending the first week in Auckland with my family we then headed down to Wellington, the capital, which we both love. We lived here while I studied and we made great friends there […]

I’ve been writing a review of two related ChessBase DVDs by GM Daniel King. Their both on the Najdorf Variation of the Sicilian Defense. There is a lot of discussion about making the e5 and or d5 pawn break. When to attempt them. How to go about them successfully. When to keep the pawn structure […]

(I guess I shouldn't call the tournament "Wijk aan Zee" now that they've turned it into a travelling circus, but that is the tournament's traditional location, it gives the event a continuity that outlasts its various sponsors, and the present sponsor's name induces titters for those familiar with English slang. So "Wijk aan Zee" it is. On with the report!)
Round 9 has just about put an end...
