The World Junior Chess Championship for boys and girls U20 was officially opened in India. Special guest at the opening ceremony was World Champion Viswanathan Anand, who praised the efforts of the local government and remembered the days when he won his world junior title.

Despite the loss in the final round, ex World Champion Vladimir Kramnik convincingly won the 39th Dortmund Chess Meeting, point and a half clear of the second placed Le Quang Liem. An impressive achievement as this is Kramnik's 10th Dortmund trophy. He first won the event back in 1995 as a 20-years-old.

The 5th Torneo Internacional A.D. San Juan was held from 25th to 31st July at the Hotel Blanca de Navarra in Pamplona, Spain. 108 players from 18 countries, including 18 Grandmasters, competed in the 9-round Swiss event. First place was 3.000 € worth.
